Over-All: ariel is a rather plain young woman as far as appearance goes. She is medium height, about 5'7, and her build is unremarkable. She has yet to achieve the firm fitness of the dragonriders, but she doesn't have much excess fat on her. She does have curves, but not enough to say that she has an "hourglass" figure. Her strawberry blonde hair is not quite vivid enough to be called red, although she often does just that. It falls to her mid back and she has never worn it short before. Her hair gets curly in humid weather, but for the most part, it falls in a gentle wave. Her eyes are the dark brown that are so common on Pern, and she has a medium complexion befitting her features. Many would say that Fariel's bright, almost teasing smile, which rarely leaves her face, is her best and most distinguishing feature.
Personality
Fariel is the girl your mothers warned you about. She doesn't mean it, necessarily, but she is a troublemaker. When she gets bored, she has to do something, and that something often turns out to be against the rules. Fariel is a person of action, and if she is struck by an idea, she often does not think over the consequences before going through with it.
However, even though she gets into trouble a lot because of her carelessness, Fariel is not really a "bad girl." She is actually really sweet, and she tries not to pass judgement on anyone. Fariel is very outgoing and she is usually friendly to everyone she meets, unless something strikes her as wrong about them. She is a chatty young lady and if you give her a chance, she'll talk anyone's ear off.
And then there are the boys. Depending on your opinion and what gossip you've heard, Fariel is a flirt, a tease, or a floozy. In all honesty, while Fariel wouldn't describe herself as a prude, most of her flirting is just playful. She thinks its fun, and she likes the attention the boys give her when she puts herself out there.
Something that people wouln't know about Fariel when they first meet her is that she is a real music lover. Even though she can't play an instrument to save her life, she likes to sing and she has a fairly good voice, even though she isn't Harper trained. Right along with music goes dancing. Whenever there's music playing, she's sure to be tapping her foot, and if there's room, she'll dance. At a gather, she is the first to get out on the dance floor, and she loves it if a partner is willing to try the more difficult dances, like the toss dance.
As for the gambling? Well, the girl does like a game of chance. Besides dragon poker, she'll bet on everything from the weather to how many tubers are in a bag. And, of course, now that she's in the Weyr, she is planning to be all over that clutch betting!
History
Fariel's mother, Amirel, was a notorious wild woman who left a life as the third daughter of a Lord Holder to join a trading caravan. Her father, Farlan, was one of the men of the caravan. She had an interesting but chaotic childhood. The caravan never stayed in one place for too long, and she had little stability as a child, but she was not unhappy with two loving parents and a world of adventure to be had. There were not many children in the caravan, and as a result she was a mature and precocious child who had no problems spending time with the adults.
The problems began when Fariel was ten turns old, when her beloved father was killed in an accident while out riding his runnerbeast. She was devestated, and so was her mother, but in Fariel's opinion, the worst thing didn't happen until two turns later, when Amirel met a Holder man and agreed to marry him. Most horrible of all, this required Amirel and Fariel to leave the caravan and move in to the Hold. Amirel tried to explain--she really did love her new husband, he made her happy, eleven turns on the road had made her realize how good it was to have a steady home--but Fariel refused to admit that this could be a good thing. Even the gift of a puppy from her new stepfather didn't win her over.
Fariel spent six turns there in the Hold, and while she did soften a bit towards her stepfather, she never stoped longing for a different kind of life. She was also gettingn in trouble almost constantly for her fliratious ways (she had discovered boys a few turns earlier) and because she had started a little gambling business with the other teens in the Hold. (She had watched the traders play dragon poker and picked it up from then, and it was fun and she could make a few marks, so what was the big deal?) One night she was caught invading the Hold's wine cellar with a few friends. After a long talk with her mother, they came to the conclusion that it was time for Fariel to get out of the Hold and clear her head for a while.
The question was, how to do that? Fariel wanted to find her old trading caravan, while her mother wanted her to become a crafter, maybe even find someone willing to train her rather pleasant voice into Harper quality. Fariel was seriously considering the Harper option--it was a very resepctable craft, she could travel as a journeywoman, and they liked wine--when something completely unexpected happened. Fariel was lurking around the courtyard one day with her friends when a dragon appeared in the sky and, to everyone's surprise, landed right in the middle of the courtyard. Fariel wasn't scared at all, a fact which she made sure to mention to her friends. She had seen dragons before flying sweeps, and she knew they were good beasts. That was, she wasn't scared until the blue dragon extended his neck and nudged her, almost knocking her down! The rider, amused, told her that his dragon seemed to like her a lot. He explained that there was a clutch on the sands of River Bend Weyr, and that she could be a candidate. This was just the chance that Fariel had been waiting for! She immediately agreed to candidacy, and is now anxiously awaiting the Hatching.
