CLIMATE
Sanctum Weyr is located in the far south of the Southern Continent and the weather is a touch more extreme than the coastal areas. Southern does not receive the bitter winters of the north, but the weather does drop to chilly temperatures in winter months, with a great deal of rain and sometimes snow that carries on until spring. Summer is dry, arid heat that can be exceptionally draining, and many of the residents at the Weyr and Hold alike visit the river and pond for swimming. The valley has a tendency to flood when it rains too much and for that reason, both the Weyr and the Hold have blockades to stop water. The presence of the mountains makes for the summer months to be considerably cooler than most places in Southern, though at the cost of sunshine; it is often cloudy and tans are significantly less common as in most parts of Pern. Fall is the primary crop season, when wetness returns from the dry summer months, before the chill of winter sets in. Quakes are rare, but not unheard of, and people at Sanctum Weyr and Hold are accustomed to these strange phenomena, having dealt with them for Turns.
GEOGRAPHY
Sanctum Weyr is built into a mountain face that is shaped like a horse shoe. The mountains overlook a massive valley, with a river and pond running through it, and Sanctum Hold is on the opposite side of the valley. The Weyr has only one ground entrance, a road through the valley so that anyone approaching can be seen from several dragonlengths away. There is a Weyrlake for bathing, built on a natural hot springs, and it spans deep enough for a full grown queen to bathe in. There is a massive boulder at the center of the lake where Weyrbrats like to play, as well as dragons. The Weyrbowl has entrances to the lower caverns, beastcrafter halls, Weyrling Barracks and Candidate Barracks. The weyrs themselves vary in size, and many of the largest weyrs have ledges for the dragons to sun on - some even have private bathing areas for the residents, though this is somewhat rare. Dragon hunting areas are up in the mountain on the other side of the Weyr, away from the prying eyes of the holders.
