Raja was sitting in her room, trying to memorize the anatomy of a person when she heard a yell from outside. It didn't say anything, but when it sounded again, it was getting closer. She got up and stuck her head out of the room to see who was making the horrible noise.
Several people passed by the door, but she didn't hear the yell again. Up here, it took something to make people yell. It wasn't coming from the infirmary, but in the opposite direction. Then, she heard it again, "RAJA!!!"
She paled. That was the voice of journeyman Kuthine, and he sounded mad. Hopefully, he hadn't found the 'mistake' she had made. The holler came again, and she knew he had found it.
"RAJA! Come out here NOW!" Kuthine was getting closer to her, and people were still walking fast to get away from him. He did have a tendency to throw things when he got mad. Sure enough, she heard a large crash and wondered what piece of equipment would have to be painstakingly remade because he had broken it.
She ducked back into the room and grabbed up the small scrap she had transcribed the anatomy chart on and headed back out in to the hall. Slowly, she edged her way around people and toward Kuthine's room.
"Sir?" She asked, quietly. "You...uhm... called?"
He looked up from the table where he had begun sweeping the broken glass of a beaker up. "Of course I called, Raja. I've been calling for the last five minutes. Or more." He practically snarled at her as he said it.
"When," he said. "When were you going to tell someone what you did with the beakers?"
He jaw dropped at the look on his face, but when he spoke she shut her mouth and blushed bright red. She had hoped no one would find the botched set of beakers she had hidden in the back of her cubby in the classroom. They had had to mix fellis infusions, and a few other things, and in her infinite wisdom she had wanted to know what happened when the stuff was mixed. So, sitting quietly in the back of the room where she was less likely to be noticed and thence get in trouble, she had mixed bits and small measures of this and that. The resultant coagulated goop had smelled worse than stewing numbweed, and had not come out of the beaker. When the class was over, she had already put the offending beaker in the back of her cubby. Now, she saw what was all over the table Kuthine was cleaning and her heart fell.
Over the last couple sevendays she had been doing so well. Her mind hadn't wandered during lessons and she hadn't gotten in much more trouble than any other apprentice. But, she was Kuthine's apprentice and expected to be above the rest. The nasty goop that she had hidden had liquefied in the beaker. When he found it, he had set it on the table. But it ate through the glass and part of the table, and he was presently pouring water on it to stop the erosion of the floor. He had gotten most of it to stop, but it still bubbled and smoked a bit around the edges.
"Well?" He prompted when she didn't answer.
"I... I would have told you Kuthine, I swear," she stammered. The smell was noxious, but she couldn't very well leave when it was her fault.
"Ri-ight," he said. "When would you have told me, Raja? When the acid ate through the floor and into the level belo us? What if someone had gotten hurt by it? This stuff is strong enough to eat through the stone of this floor," he gestured to the dents and dimples it had indeed left on the floor. "It would make no big job out of eating through flesh and bone. You could have gotten someone hurt this time, Raja."
He stopped talking as the last of the acid was neutralized. "Now that I have this under control, you're going to clean it up. And while you're cleaning, I will quiz you on that anatomy lesson you should have memorized by now. It's been two sevendays, so don't complain. You've had long enough. Now get started, and be careful not to get any of this on you. It'll burn a bit, so add water as you clean it up." He turned and shooed the drudges away from the door. This would be her chore and hers alone. The images that his comment about the stuff eating through bone flashed through her mind and she threw more water into the puddle that had formed.
((OOC: Ok. I know they have acids... I know acids can react oddly to things... hence the coagulated goop. And I NPCd Kuthine. Hope that's ok. It was just for the purpose of the post...))
